> Chan Master Kuchan Zijian of Tiantong was a son of the Gao family of Fuzhou. He composed a gāthā upon hanging a bell: 'Cast from a single mold, it becomes ever more refined; / Taught on level ground, it refuses to cease. / If you wish its magnificent sound to echo throughout the universe, / You must ascend yet one more story.'
