> Chan Master Yanxi Wen of Jingshan in Hangzhou was a native of Fujian. Ascending the hall upon lighting the stove, he cited: Zhaozhou instructed the assembly, saying: 'Thirty years ago, by the Southern hearth, this old monk had a saying without host or guest; until now, no one has ever brought it up.' The Master commented: 'The myriad array of phenomena, light and dark, form and emptiness, bring it up day and night. It is not that the ancient Buddha Zhaozhou did not know it; he was merely too hasty in his journey.'
