> Chan Master Qingjian of Tiantong in Mingzhou was a son of the Zhang family of Qiantang. The Master's conduct was solitary and pure; at the time people called him 'Jian, the traveler from Zhejiang.' A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The Master said, "I do not wish to speak of it to you." The monk said, "Please, Upādhyāya, speak of it." The Master said, "Bodhidharma cannot come again." Later in life the Master resided at Xuedou, where he died. His stūpa was built at the southeast corner of the monastery.
