> Chan Master Jianshao of Jiufeng in Mingzhou. A monk asked, "I have heard that the Upādhyāya is a direct son of Letan; is this true?" The Master said, "It is." The monk said, "Do you still remember the phrase that brought you strength back then?" The Master said, "I remember." The monk said, "Please present it." The Master said, "The left hand clenches a fist; the right hand holds a brush." Ascending the hall: "This mountain monk's speaking of Chan is like a grasshopper spitting oil: squeeze it and it comes out; if you don't squeeze it, there is not a single drop. Why? Simply because I have never read ancient and modern nidānas, nor have I arranged exquisite views and knowledge beforehand to wait for ascending the hall, only to hone my lips and lick my chops, reeking of congee and rice to scorch all of you. Whenever there is a question and an answer, it is truly out of having no choice. Is it only this mountain monk? Look at that Tathāgata Mahābhijñājñānābhibhū: he sat silently for ten kalpas without opening his mouth. Later, only because the devas, Brahmās, and sixteen princes repeatedly urged and entreatied him did he begin to speak of it. Yet it was not that he kept it secret, but simply that he dared not bury all of you. Since this mountain monk does not bury all of you, do not say that this mountain monk can ascend the seat. Attend!"
