> Chan Master Benyi Zhengjue of Zhihai in the Eastern Capital was a son of the Peng family of Fuzhou. Ascending the hall, he said: “Opening the mouth is right; closing the mouth is right—beneath the eyes there is no harm in adding a nose. Opening the mouth is wrong; closing the mouth is wrong—both eyes and nostrils are swept away. Striking the buddhas, striking the patriarchs—before a true person one speaks no falsehood. Pacifying the buddhas, pacifying the patriarchs—a patch-robed monk's belly is as wide as the ocean. This is one going out and one coming in, half closed and half open; it is what this mountain monk constantly uses. May I ask you, venerable Chan practitioners: Why does the tip of the flagstaff point to the sky? Why does the wrestler roll up his fist?” After a good while, he said: “Investigate!”
> Another day, he ascended the hall, picked up his staff, and said: “In the heavens, this staff shares its brightness with the sun and moon; on the earth, it shares its solidity with the mountains and rivers. Among kings and lords, it takes the place of the bulrush whip; among common folk, it protects the body and wards off evil. For patch-robed monks, by day it lies across their shoulders as they cross waters and pass through clouds; by night, lodging in wayside inns, it props the gates and bars the doors. Now tell me: in the hands of this mountain monk, what is it used for? Do you wish to understand? Sometimes, strolling along the Eastern Lake, I point out the blue distant mountains to a monk from afar.” Striking the meditation bench, he stepped down from the seat.
> Ascending the hall, he said: “I recall that when this old monk was seven years old, at the village school I obtained a Dharma gate that transcends sentiment, departs from views, and is utterly wondrous and utterly profound. More than sixty years have passed since my spirit was first imbued with it. Today, I venture forth to announce it generally to the great assembly. If you wish to transmit and uphold it, you must listen attentively.” Then he said:
> “The plowing and planting on the cold plains are done; / Leading the calf and shouldering firewood, one returns. / Tonight, there is a fire in the hearth, / And clothes on the bodies of the whole household.
> Venerable Chan practitioners! When you meet someone, do not quote this mistakenly!”
> Ascending the hall, he said: “I have this one move that everyone chews in their mouths. Those who can chew through it must quickly spit it out; those who cannot chew through it will find it turns into poison.” He then called out to the venerable Chan practitioners: “What does it taste like? Please try to tell me.” After a good while, he said: “It is not that the King of Healers lacks prescription and meaning; but with sūxiang within a thousand miles, the elephant does not turn back.”
