> Chan Master Baojixiong of Caoshan in Fuzhou. A monk asked: “What is the Buddha?” The Master said: “A cold cat does not catch mice.” The monk asked: “In every single particle of dust is a Buddha-land; on every single leaf is a Śākyamuni. Where should a student set his foot down?” The Master said: “The grasses on the great earth are rampant and vast.” The monk said: “Thank you, Master, for answering my question.” The Master said: “It is hard to deceive a person of clear vision.” The monk said: “Let the great assembly remember this at once.” The Master said: “Caoshan has suffered a defeat today.”
> The monk asked: “When the Dharma thunder rumbles once and dragons and elephants come from all four directions, how is the order carried out?” The Master said: “The clear breeze does not understand my intention; it blows the white clouds into a disordered flurry.” The monk said: “Does the student still have a place to settle his life and body, or not?” The Master said: “Tread on solid ground.”
> He then said: “Skillfully responding to all quarters, where ten thousand workings converge—when meeting face-to-face, I shall not ask about that. When you pick up a spoon and hold chopsticks, why can you not speak?” After a good while, he said: “Caoshan has suffered a defeat today.”
> He also said: “The mountains are not blue; the waters are not green. North, south, east, and west, there is nowhere to set down one's foot. White clouds fly in wisps over the peak; when night comes, they return to roost in the reed blossoms.”
> He also said: “A thousand rivers contest and surge, ten thousand streams share the same source. The precious moon mounts in radiance, its light dividing across worlds numerous as the sands. The mountains, rivers, and the great earth—light and dark are naturally distinct. Sitting, lying down, and walking—in whose lot does this lie? Among you, is there any patch-robed monk for whom the path of speech is cut off and box and lid fit together? Come forth and meet Caoshan!” At that time, a monk came forward and was just making prostrations when the Master said: “Great assembly, remember this topic clearly!”
