> Chan Master Deqian of Dagui in Tanzhou. A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?"
> The Master said, "Water comes forth from the mountain."
> He asked, "What is the intention?"
> The Master said, "How could a mountain stream detain it?"
> He then said, "The mountain flowers are like silk brocade—Mañjuśrī bumps into them with his eyes; the secluded birds chirp melodiously—Avalokiteśvara plugs up his ears. Worthy ones, what else are you pondering? Last night at the third watch I could not sleep; rolling over, I caught Samantabhadra and banished him to the land of the unarisen. In one sleep straight until dawn, this morning I am again able to meet with you all and talk of dreams. Ah, what kind of talk is this?" He struck the staff and stepped down from the seat.
