> Chan Master Chaoxin Haiyin of Dinghui in Suzhou was a native of Guizhou. A monk asked, "What is the exact, great meaning of the Buddhadharma?" The Master said, "A speckled bamboo staff from the source of the Xiang River." \[The monk\] said, "What is the meaning of that?" The Master said, "Every branch bears tearstains." \[The monk\] asked, "What is the first phrase?" The Master said, "Nata in wrath." \[The monk\] said, "What is the second phrase?" The Master said, "The patch-robed monk is at a loss." \[The monk\] said, "What is the third phrase?" The Master said, "The Western Heavens and this land." Ascending the hall, \[the Master said,\] "A mud snake bites a stone turtle; the exposed pillar chirps and cries. Give Mount Sumeru a blow with the stick; Old Yama roars with laughter. Look into it!" Ascending the hall, \[the Master said,\] "If you recognize prajñā, you are bound by prajñā. If you do not recognize prajñā, you are also bound by prajñā. Setting aside both recognizing and not recognizing, let me ask all of you: what is the essence of prajñā? Go to the hall and investigate!" Ascending the hall, \[the Master said,\] "The orioles' songs end; the cicadas' cries quicken. A black turtle entering the water does not get its head wet. Egrets fly into the grove of reed flowers; the snow and moonlight shining together cannot match them. Hūṃ!"
