> Chan Master Ziren of Yongtai in Chuzhou. A monk asked, "What is the white ox on the open ground?" The Master said, "Exceedingly difficult to herd." \[The monk\] said, "Herding is easy, but I wonder what use it has?" The Master said, "If it can be used, then use it." \[The monk\] said, "May the student borrow its use or not?" The Master said, "Even if you could use it, it is still only someone else's." He then said, "The pine wind is piercingly cold; fallen leaves are scattered about. The shore willows are withered and barren; monkeys cry on the distant peaks. If you properly observe the season, only then will you be neighbors with the sages, yet you have not emerged from the patch-robed monk's livelihood. Kind sirs! At such a time, it is best to shoulder your staff horizontally, hang your bowl-bag high, smash open the abbot's room door everywhere, and meet with the old barbarian. If even a single word does not match, shake out your sitting mat and leave. Would that not be delightful? Since this mountain monk went on itinerant pilgrimage, I have never encountered even half a person. Why is this so?" After a long pause, he said, "The land is vast and people are scarce; few are those who meet. Take care!" He also said, "The autumn wind begins to fan; the pines and bamboos intertwine in shade. The water and moon are distinct and clear, yet patch-robed monks are at a loss. Do you understand? If anyone understands, come forward and deliver some news; this mountain monk will verify it for you." After a long pause, he said, "An awl in a cloth bag that does not stick its point out is an expert hand!" He descended from the seat.
