> Jayata was a native of the kingdom of Northern India; his surname is not clearly known. He had always possessed an understanding of the Way and admired and penetrated the subtle principle. Initially, while traveling in Central India, he met the Mahāsattva Kumāralāta teaching and transforming in that kingdom, and questioned him about his doubts regarding retribution. Kumāralāta explained to him that karma connects the three times. Once the matter had become clear, he sought to leave home under him. Kumāralāta did not immediately grant permission, but returned with him to his home country to have him report to his parents before ordaining him as a monk. Kumāralāta knew that he was truly a vessel of the Great Dharma, and moreover, according to the Buddha's prophecy, he entrusted the Dharma to him. Later, the Mahāsattva traveled through various kingdoms teaching beings and arrived at the city of Rājagṛha. That country had long had many followers of religious paths; hearing of the Mahāsattva's arrival, they all rushed to follow him. Prior to this, the leader of the assembly was named Vasubandhu, whose cultivation was diligent and thorough: he did not sleep day or night, paid homage to the Buddha during the six intervals of the day, wore rag-robes, ate a single meal, and was serene and free from desire. His disciples revered him greatly on this account. The Mahāsattva said to the assembly: 'Can this dhūta of yours, with his rigorous cultivation of the pure brahma-conduct, attain the Buddha Way?' They said: 'This superior person is so vigorous—how could he not attain the Way?' The Mahāsattva said: 'This man is far from the Way. Even if his austere practices extend through kalpas, they merely nourish the root of delusion; how could he achieve realization?' They said: 'What inner virtue do you possess, Benevolent One, that you belittle our master?' The Mahāsattva said: 'I do not seek the Way, nor am I confused. I do not pay homage to the Buddha, nor am I disrespectful. I do not sit for long periods, nor am I indolent. I do not eat one meal, nor do I eat various meals. I do not know contentment, nor am I covetous.' Hearing these words, Bandhu was delighted, and composed a verse in praise, saying:
