> In the fourth generation from Dajian: Chan Master Huaihai. He was a man of Changle in Fuzhou. At first he studied under Chan Master Daoyi in Nankang and attained the essential Dharma principle. When he resided at Mount Baizhang, scholars from the four directions all flocked to him. Master Hai possessed especially far-reaching foresight: considering that there had never been established regulations for assemblies of Chan practitioners, he took what was fitting for the circumstances, balanced it with the vinaya and sūtra codes, and bequeathed these standards to later generations. The Dharma heirs he produced were thirty in all: one was Lingyou of Mount Gui; one was Xiyun of Huangbo; one was Huanzhong of Mount Daci; one was Pu'an of Tiantai; one was Xingkong of Shishuang; one was Changguan of Junzhou; one was Da'an of Fuzhou; one was Shenzan of Guling; one was Chan Master Tong of Guangzhou; one was Chan Master Yunlong (also written as Longyun) Platform of Jiangzhou; one was Chan Master Dao of Weiguo in the Eastern Capital; one was the upādhyāya Wansui of Zhenzhou; one was the upādhyāya Dongshan of Hongzhou; one was Wuwei of Gao'an; one was Daokuang of Dongyan; one was Chan Master Su of Xingzhou; one was Jiben of Mount Dacheng in Tangzhou; one was Huishen of Mount Xiaocheng; one was Zhaoyi of Yangzhou; one was Jianshen of Luofu; one was Fanyun of Mount Jiuxian in Hongzhou; one was the upādhyāya Niepan of Baizhang; one was Chan Master Cao of Mount Lu; one was Qizhen of Yuezhou; one was Tianxing of Mount Bao in Junzhou; one was Bi'an of Mount Damei; one was Zangshu of Mount Liao; one was Daofang of Mount Qishe; one was the upādhyāya Qingtian; and one was the upādhyāya Dayu.
