Brief Biographies of the Branch Houses of the Orthodox Lineage, Part One (with Preface)

### [7.3](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2078~en-mt.7.3)

Preface: When the orthodox lineage reached the Sixth Patriarch, Chan Master Dajian, his Dharma became increasingly widespread. Masters and disciples no longer transmitted it exclusively one to one; thus later generations each came to form their own houses. Furthermore, those who received the style of their house and became practitioners grew ever more numerous in subsequent generations, spreading throughout the realm. The origins and details of these matters have already been set forth fully in the two records—the Chuandeng lu and the Guangdeng lu—and the Song Gaoseng zhuan; I do not list them again here. What I record here merely arranges the lineage of their descent in order. Therefore, the biographies of the branch houses begin with Dajian and end with Zhida, numbering 1,304 persons in all.

### [7.4](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2078~en-mt.7.4)

In the second generation of Dajian was Chan Master Qingyuan Xingsi, a man of Anyu in Jizhou. At first, among Dajian's assembly, he was the foremost head. Dajian once said to him, "From antiquity, the robe and the Dharma have been transmitted together, simply to win trust in later generations. Now that I have found the right person, why worry about lack of trust? Ever since I received the robe, I have always feared being unable to avoid troubles; if I transmit it again now, I fear it will give rise to disputes. The robe and bowl should remain to protect the mountain gate. You, then, should spread the Dharma to transform one region, not allowing it to be cut off." Xingsi soon returned to his home county and resided at Jingju Monastery on Mount Qingyuan, where students flocked to him most. He had one Dharma heir: Shitou Xiqian of Nanyue.

### [7.6](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2078~en-mt.7.6)

In the second generation of Dajian was Chan Master Nanyue Huairang, a man of Jinzhou. Originally, from the assembly of National Preceptor An of Mount Song, he went to visit the Sixth Patriarch Dajian. Dajian asked, "From what place do you come?" He replied, "I come from Mount Song." Dajian said, "What thing comes thus?" Rang replied, "To speak of it as resembling a single thing would miss the mark." Dajian said, "Can it still be cultivated and realized?" Rang said, "It is not that cultivation and realization do not exist, but that it cannot be defiled." Dajian said, "Just this non-defilement is what all buddhas protect and keep in mind. You are thus; I am also thus. Formerly, Prajñātāra prophesied that from under your feet a young colt will come forth and trample to death everyone under heaven. This illness lies in your mind; there is no need to speak of it quickly." Rang was instantly and thoroughly awakened. He served Dajian for fifteen years, and soon went to Nanyue, where he resided at the Prajñā Hermitage; students from the four quarters converged upon him. The Dharma heirs issuing from him thus numbered nine persons in all: one was Daoyi of Jiangxi; one was Changhao of Nanyue; one was Zhida; one was Tanran; one was Shenzhao of Chaozhou; one was Yanjun of Yangzhou; one was Bon'yo of Silla; one was Xuansheng; and one was Fakong of Dongwu.

He attained the Dharma from Dajian, and soon lived in seclusion at Dangzi Valley on Mount Baiya in Nanyang, not leaving his mountain for more than forty years. Emperor Suzong of the Tang heard of his reputation, and in the second year of Shangyuan dispatched his official Sun Chaojin with an imperial decree. When Huizhong arrived at the capital, he was granted a sedan chair to enter the hall, and treated with the etiquette due to a teacher. Huizhong's power of the Way was exceedingly ample, and his wisdom and eloquence were peerless. Although he admonished and instructed the emperors with the Way, he showed no fear or embarrassment; in baffling and breaking those with heterodox views, despite myriad difficult challenges, he never yielded in the slightest. The Dharma heirs issuing from him were five persons: one was Dianyuan Zhenying of Jizhou; one was Xiangyan Weijie of Dengzhou; one was Sun Zhirou, Commander of the Unequaled Opening of the Office; \[and two others were:\]

In the second generation from Dajian, there was Chan Master Shenhui of Heze in Luoyang. He first visited Dajian as a novice (śrāmaṇera). Prompted by their question-and-answer exchange, he gave rise to great wisdom. After his ordination, he encountered Dajian's entering into extinction. The teachings of Shenxiu in the north were gradually flourishing, so Shenhui proceeded to the capital. In the fourth year of the Tianbao era, he single-handedly determined the patriarchal way into Northern and Southern lineages, authoring a book entitled Xianzong lun (Treatise Revealing the Lineage). Thenceforth, what Dajian transmitted came to be honoured throughout the realm. Upon leaving home, he initially studied the disciplinary rules and dhyāna-concentration, and was able to master them all. In his later years, he went to Mount Heng, where he met Master Rang and thoroughly comprehended the great Dharma essentials. Soon after, he brought his Dharma to guide Buddhist practitioners throughout the realm. At that time, princes, nobles, and great men who admired his Way faced north and placed themselves as his disciples in numbers beyond reckoning. The prophecies of the former patriarchs were all fulfilled in him. The Dharma heirs that came forth from him were one hundred and thirty-seven in total. In the sixth generation from Dajian, there was Chan Master Yixuan of Linji in Zhenzhou. He was a man from Nanhua in Caozhou, whose surname was Xing. From youth he possessed far-reaching aspirations, and upon receiving the precepts, he applied himself earnestly to studying the ancestral vehicle. When he came to Huangbo's Dharma assembly, the head monk at first encouraged the Chan Master to question Huangbo about the Dharma, saying, "What is the real meaning of the Patriarch coming from the West?" Huangbo immediately struck him. The Master asked three times in all, and Huangbo struck him three times as well. Because of this, the Master took his leave of the head monk. The head monk thereupon said to Huangbo, "Although Yixuan is a junior, he is teachable. If he takes leave and departs, you should use many means to receive him." The next day, when Yixuan indeed took his leave, Huangbo said to him, "You may go to Dayu." When Yixuan arrived, Dayu consequently asked, "Where have you come from?" Yixuan said, "I have come from Huangbo." Dayu said, "What teachings did Huangbo have?" Yixuan said, "I once asked three times, 'What is the real meaning of coming from the West?' and received three beatings from him. I do not know where my fault lay." Dayu said, "Huangbo was so grandmotherly, wearing himself out completely for your sake, yet you still look for where the fault lay!" Yixuan thereupon had a great awakening and said, "After all, there isn't much to the Buddha-Dharma!" Dayu grabbed Yixuan at once and said, "Just a moment ago you said, 'I do not understand,' and now you say there isn't much to it! How much is it? How much is it?" Yixuan thereupon struck Dayu in the ribs three times with his fists. Dayu pushed Yixuan away and said, "Your master is Huangbo; this is none of my business!" Yixuan then returned to Huangbo. Huangbo asked, "Why have you returned so soon?" Yixuan said, "Only because of your grandmotherly kindness." Huangbo said, "Just wait until I see that old fellow Dayu—I will give him a thrashing!" Yixuan said, "Why talk of waiting to see him? Strike him right now!" and gave Huangbo a slap. Huangbo let out a hearty laugh. Later, the Chan Master returned to Zhao.
