> The two monks Shi Huiyue and Shuguo both entered renunciation in their youth and resided at Shengye Monastery in the capital. In the third year of Chuigong, both were serving as annual prefects of the internal treasury. Suddenly, in the fifth month, they were arrested by underworld officials and brought to see the King. The King asked, 'What karmic practices did you engage in during your life?' Yue replied, 'I recited three or four rolls of the Lotus Sūtra.' The King pressed his palms together in reverence to him and said, 'Let them be released to return for now. Send someone to lead them to see the places of suffering.' Walking southwest, they arrived at a large gate. In the northern courtyard they saw a long row of buildings with planks for walls, matching each other east and west, made with holes no different from the holes in a pillory. In each and every hole was a monk's head. They saw Daliang, a monk of their own monastery; while his body was still alive \[in the human world\], his head protruded through a hole. Seeing Yue and Guo, his weeping and terrified shouting were beyond description. This Daliang had once supervised and repaired three large images in the hall and had privately used the property belonging to the images; therefore, he had been summoned and arrested. Beside every hole was a hell warden of terrifying appearance, who held a knife and severed his neck, so that blood was spattered in wild disorder. When the hell warden put the head back and cried out 'Live!', the head again protruded through the hole. In this way, in no time at all, it was repeated ten to twenty times. Next, walking west, they also saw the places where sins were suffered for killing living beings and eating meat. Countless multitudes of monks were sliced and dismembered, their cries of unbearable distress at being harmed \[filling the air\]. All the living beings they had eaten came to demand their lives, tearing their flesh and drinking their blood. They also saw the vihārasvāmin Zhigan and the karmadāna Alu of their own monastery, bound exceedingly tight, undergoing trial for the crimes of eating meat and using saṃgha property. Suddenly, Yue and Guo were pushed into a deep, dark pit. Shortly after, they revived. Their entire bodies were drenched in sweat, their souls bewildered. Less than a month later, Liang died, and Gan also died suddenly, suffering extreme agony. Alu brought forth the mind \[of awakening\], repented, did not leave his room, and read the entire Canon day and night with diligent sincerity. Several times he saw two men in yellow robes, envoys of the underworld tribunal, riding white horses to come and take him. Having arrived inside Alu's gate, one man said, 'Because he has brought forth a great mind and reads the entire Canon day and night without cease, he ought to be released.' They came altogether three or four times. Thereupon Alu personally witnessed this and persevered in diligent repentance without stopping, and in the end escaped harm.
