> Huiqi was a native of Jinzhou. Wandering far from home, he entered the monastic life and resided at Hengyue Monastery in Hengzhou. Yet his resolve for the Path was exceedingly meager, while his jealousy of the worthy was particularly severe. Externally he maintained dignity and deportment, but internally he was thoroughly corrupt. There was a vihārasvāmin named Yiben, an eminent monk of lofty conduct, who guided and attracted people from all four directions, expounding and promoting all kinds of wholesome deeds. In the first year of the Zaichu reign era (689/690 CE), on the eighth day of the fourth month, he conferred the monastic precepts at the Prajñā Terrace of Hengyue Monastery. Huiqi, being junior in age and shallow in virtue, was not included among the ten precept masters. Flaring with anger, he intended to hatch a treacherous plot. On the evening of the seventh day, he came to the mountain monastery and said, "Someone has reported that this place is committing rebellion, and surprise troops will soon arrive! How can you noisily gather in vain?" At that time, the vihārasvāmin Yiben said to Huiqi, "You wish to create an evil condition to destroy another's Dharma-eye. If you do not quickly repent, your two eyes will go blind, or you will fall victim to madness." Huiqi's breath swelled with rage and his countenance altered; he hesitated and then turned back. Before a month had passed, he went to the marketplace in Xiangzhou to trade. There he contracted an agonizing pain in both eyes and died in a few days.
