> To the east of the tree, on either side of the great road, there is a stupa at each place where the Demon King, disturbing the Buddha, was thwarted and retreated. In the vihāra northwest of the tree, light shone forth during the time of Kāśyapa Buddha. Popular tradition says that if one circumambulates it seven times with supreme sincerity, one gains knowledge of past lives in this very life. Furthermore, a stupa northwest of the wall, made of saffron-scented clay, is over forty feet high. At the southeast corner of the wall of the tree, beside a nyagrodha tree, there is a stupa. Inside the vihāra is a seat where Great Brahmā petitioned the Buddha to turn the wheel of the Dharma when he first attained the fruit. At the four corners within the wall, there are stupas at each. When the Buddha first received the grass and proceeded to the tree, he first went to the southwest, and the earth shook; he then turned to the northwest, then to the northeast, and then to the southeast, and the earth quaked at all of them. He then went from the northwest to beneath the tree and sat facing east upon the vajrāsana, whereupon the ground became peaceful and still; hence, stupas were erected to commemorate this. Outside the wall to the southwest, at the site of the dwellings of the two cowherd maidens, at the site beside it where they boiled the milk-rice, and at the site next to it where the Buddha received the milk-rice, commemorative stupas are erected at all of them. Outside the south gate of the tree is a great pond over seven hundred paces in circumference, clear and pure, where fish and nāgas dwell. Next to the south is a pond made by Śakra for the Buddha to wash his robe.
