> The kingdom of Magadha (in Central India; the ancient form was corrupted): It is more than five thousand li in circuit. The cities have few inhabitants, but towns and villages are extremely numerous. There are more than fifty monasteries, with monks exceeding ten thousand, mostly studying the Mahāyāna. There are several dozen deva temples, with very many non-Buddhists. The old city lies north of the mountains of Rājagṛha, leaning east for two hundred and forty li, and borders the Ganges to the north. It is more than seventy li in circuit, and the people live to great ages. It was then named the city of Kusumapura, which means "Palace of the Fragrant Reed Flowers".
