> The kingdom of Koṅkaṇapura (South India) is more than five thousand li in circuit. The capital is more than thirty li in circuit. There are over one hundred monasteries and more than ten thousand monks, who study both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. There are several hundred deva temples where tīrthikas live together. Beside the palace city there is a great monastery whose vihāra is more than one hundred feet high, with over three hundred monks. Inside is the jewelled crown of Prince Sarvārthasiddha, just under two feet tall, which emits light on fast days; this was from his time as a bodhisattva. Beside the great city, within a great monastery, is a vihāra over fifty feet high, built by the arhat Two Hundred Koṭis (this is the name of a single person) \[Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa\], containing a sandalwood statue of Maitreya, more than ten feet high, which emits light on fast days. Near the north of the city is a tāla forest, more than thirty li in circuit; its leaves are broad and long, their colour bright and moist, and various countries together collect them for writing. In the forest is a stūpa where the four buddhas walked and sat. There is also the relic stūpa of Two Hundred Koṭis \[Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa\] in this forest. East of the city is a stūpa thirty feet high containing relics that emit light on fast days; the Buddha once travelled here and preached the Dharma. Further, going about 2,500 li northwest through forests inhabited by ferocious beasts, one reaches the kingdom of Mahārāṣṭra (South India), which is more than six thousand li in circuit. The capital borders a great river and is more than thirty li in circuit. Their custom is that they must repay a kindness and must avenge a grudge; they are stubborn and recalcitrant, refusing to submit to King Śīlāditya. There are over one hundred monasteries and more than five thousand monks, who study both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. Deva temples number in the hundreds, and the tīrthikas are numerous. Inside and outside the great city are five stūpas at the places where the four buddhas walked and sat, marked by King Aśoka. In an old monastery south of the city is a stone statue of Avalokiteśvara; those who pray to it mostly have their wishes fulfilled. On the eastern border is a great mountain monastery built by an arhat. The great vihāra is more than one hundred feet high, and the stone statue is over seventy feet high. Above it are seven tiers of stone canopies, suspended in empty space, each separated by three feet. Tradition says they are sustained by the arhat's power of vows, or by his awe-inspiring spiritual power, or by medicinal arts; the various explanations differ. On the four sides of the vihāra are carved representations of the Buddha's causal stage and his attainment of the fruit and entry into quiescence, all complete. Outside the monastery gate, to the north and south, is a stone elephant on each side; tradition says that when the elephants roar, the earth quakes. Going more than a thousand li west from here and crossing the Narmadā River, one reaches the kingdom of Bharukaccha (South India), which is 2,500 li in circuit. The capital is more than twenty li in circuit. They believe in both heterodoxy and orthodoxy. There are over ten monasteries and more than three hundred monks, who practice the Mahāyāna Sthaviranikāya. There are ten deva temples where tīrthikas live together. The soil is saline and poor, and vegetation is sparse. From here going more than two thousand li northwest, one reaches
