> North of the old palace is a great stone chamber built by King Aśoka for his younger brother. Next is a large water cistern where King Aśoka fed the saṅgha. To the southwest of the palace is a small rocky mountain, with dozens of stone chambers around its crags and ravines, fashioned by King Aśoka using spirits under the command of the arhat Upagupta. By its side is a stone pool known popularly as the Sacred Water; those who drink from it are cured of illnesses. To the southwest of the mountain are five stūpas, each several hundred paces square. After King Aśoka had built the eighty-four thousand stūpas, five measures of relics still remained, so he built these stūpas; miracles occur from time to time. A king once took them to be the five storehouses of King Nanda and raised an army to excavate them; an earthquake shook the mountain, and loud cries issued from within the stūpas, causing the soldiers to collapse face-forward. To the southeast of the old city is the Kukkuṭārāma monastery (which means 'Rooster Garden'). In the past, \[its monks\] were once bested in debate by non-Buddhists and did not sound the ghaṇṭī for twelve years. Then the Bodhisattva Nāgārjuna (which means 'Dragon Fierce' or 'Dragon Tree') of South India arrived, subdued all the non-Buddhists, and only then was the ghaṇṭī struck again. Therefore, the stūpa is called the 'Stūpa of Striking the Ghaṇṭī'.
