> Mouzi said: "Why are you so exceedingly difficult to awaken? Speech and debate each have their proper time. Qu Yuan said: 'When the state has the Dao, one is upright; when the state is without the Dao, one rolls it up and keeps it in one's bosom.' When Ning Wuzi's state had the Dao, he was wise; when the state was without the Dao, he was foolish. Confucius said: 'When a man may be spoken with, not to speak with him is to lose the man; when a man may not be spoken with, to speak with him is to waste one's words.' Therefore, wisdom and foolishness have their own times, and speech and debate each have their own intent. Why should one merely speak and debate without practicing?"
