> The ultimate principle is empty and quiescent, dark and obscure, difficult to distinguish. To call it existent seems non-existent; to call it non-existent, it is truly existent. It is more subtle than the discourse of Laozi and more refined than the teachings of the Śākya. Words shining in golden texts and literature illuminating royal records have existed since long ago. The Sovereign's Dao encompasses the universe; his brilliance equals the sun and moon. The hidden and manifest workings are surely illuminated by him; the essentials of being and non-being have already been perused. Thereupon he condescended to issue this brilliant treatise, replying to and analyzing his subject, guiding and enticing most deeply, so that instruction and principle are thoroughly harmonious. Whoever has a mind, who would not rejoice in good fortune? Having been shown the imperial work, I reverently read and chant it. Defilements and begrudging thoughts vanish like clouds, redoubling my perpetual joy. The Dharma master's fruition is deep, and our past affinities meet today: departing from the five desires to enter the eight liberations, leaving the three realms to proceed to the One Vehicle. Having further been privileged to hear your virtuous voice, I am all the more moved to rejoice and praise. That your gracious message has touched me leaves me with profound gratitude. Wei Rui bows in reverence.
