> Second answer: Illumination does not arrive gradually, but faith is aroused by teaching. Why do I say this? Due to teaching, faith has the merit of daily advance; but since illumination is not gradual, there is no degree of entering into illumination. Yet when the wholesome mind toward the Dao arises, encumbrances decrease and defilements are subdued. Subduing resembles being identical with non-being; goodness resembles parting from evil. What is attended to is not simultaneous; it is not that the mind is fundamentally free of encumbrance. When it comes to the single awakening, the ten thousand obstructions are exhausted all at once.
