> Monk Daoxuan and others state: We have humbly heard that the continuation and flourishing of the Dharma's responsibilities must fall upon the wise and enlightened, and the veneration and protection of the true teachings rely on those of prestige and high standing. We humbly reflect that you, Duchess, have long cultivated good karma in past lives, opening boundless blessings, and early on displayed faith and wisdom, establishing imperishable causes. As for the majestic deportment of the Buddhist teachings and the regulations of the Dharma gate, we truly hope that you will specially bestow your gracious protection so that they do not fall into decline. Since the imperial edict was issued to the saṅgha excusing them from paying courtly obeisance \[to the sovereign\], it has truly accorded with the meaning of the Buddha's entrustment, and our feelings of gratitude are profound. However, monks are still commanded to kneel and bow to their parents; this merely gratifies private feelings, while greatly violating the Buddhist teachings. If this is not reported promptly, we fear that we will eventually become assimilated to worldly laws. The monks, filled with anxious longing, did not dare present this directly; overwhelmed by apprehension, we venture to bring this appeal to you. We humbly beg for your compassionate protection to report this specially to the throne. If this grace and radiance are attained, our blessed fortune will be exceedingly deep. Unable to bear our utmost earnestness, we respectfully submit this petition. Deeply mindful of having disturbed you, we only know awe and trepidation. Respectfully submitted.
