> Times encounter blockage and release; when obstruction reaches its end, peace arrives. Thousands of sages follow upon one another, and myriad teachers succeed each other in turn. Formerly, our Grand Ancestor, the Heavenly King of the Primal Origin, embodied transformation in response to cosmic tallies, soaring as a dragon into the primordial realm. Wielding provisional forms to delineate the myriad realms, wielding the axe of wisdom to subdue the six directions, he entirely purged the four heterodoxies and swept clean the three realms of existence. Just as he was about to hoist the grand net over the eight quarters and suspend the wondrous mesh across the universe, pacifying the seven desolate regions and bringing unity to the nine lands, the obscure lineage met with misfortune, and his true countenance condensed into stillness; the double light withdrew its radiance, and the empty boat overturned upon the waves. Thus it came to pass that serpents and ants swarmed in turmoil, and treacherous owls fiercely arose, clouding and defiling the true followers, confusing and leading astray the pure assembly. Cruelty fell upon the common people, and poison flowed across ten thousand kalpas. Those who cherish the Way harbor purity; though differing in mind, they share the same wrath. Our Dharma King embodies the cosmic turn in response to the era to govern all things: above, relying on his lofty nobility; below, entrusted with the hearts of the multitude. Grasping the profound mechanism, he encompasses the three-thousandfold world; commanding the holy followers, he elevates the great enterprise. Clouds arise over the four palaces, and luan-birds soar across India. He descended spiritually upon Kapilavastu to be a bulwark and moat for the Dharma, nurturing the populace and comforting the noble ministers, guiding all the worthy and consoling those who are ailing. He arrayed the axe of wisdom within his breast, and donned divine armor upon his body. Pitying the innocent among the eighteen \[elements\] and mourning that the path of the three emptannesses was cut off, his will is bent on rectifying the great enterprise, his purpose firm in quelling distress. A hundred realms and a thousand kingdoms bow in reverence before his wind of transformation. I have heard that you, Sir, have long harbored delusion in your heart, deeply astray and self-deceived, clinging stubbornly to foolish views and rigidly guarding them as conviction, squatting like a wolf in the desire realm, screeching like an owl at the divine palace, trespassing over borders and defying the sacred decrees, presuming the celestial throne can be mounted and the grand design can be altered. Surveying these several matters, I heave a deep sigh from afar. For when the Great Comprehension governs the world, all realms follow like shadows. Yet the counterfeit, foolish deva-māra did not obey the righteous order, offending the sagely hearing and perturbing the divine mind. Leading his troops to clog the void in ten thousand bizarre shapes, his fine armor blazed with the sun and his frosty spears brushed the daylight; sacred drums competed in din, and their clamor assailed the regions beyond, strutting haughtily and boasting of great might. But when the royal army made a single advance, the heterodox horde was wiped out; the māra hosts reformed their minds and, facing the wind, surrendered from within. How much more so for you, a lone general, merely a solitary individual! Your territory has no breadth, and your followers do not form an army. Yet you seek to go against principle and violate the regular order, laying waste to glorious cities, usurping divine authority, taking false preeminence for credit, and debasing the true with the counterfeit. Is this not an error? Now Śākyamuni governs the world, his Way flourishing in the initial kalpa. Wondrous transformation stands august, and his spiritual net governs far and wide. Men of wisdom gather peacefully, their profound strategies surpassing the world. Warriors leap like dragons, a thousand squadrons grasping the reins. Harmonizing strategy with true realization, their extraordinary plans excel all. Therefore, He has commissioned with talisman: Vanguard Great General, Commander of Jambūdvīpa, the Marquis Who Turned to Righteousness, Sadāprarudita—by nature uniquely gifted, who elucidated profound awakening in righteousness, his spirit loftier than Mount Sumeru, his ferocious resolve encompassing the world, skilled in arms and versed in letters, his loyalty shining at the imperial court; leading forty trillions, he spurs his horse at the head of the path. Therefore, He has commissioned with talisman: Great General Who Awes from Afar, Commander of the Four Deva-realms, Duke of Trāyastriṃśa, the Guide Dharmodgata—in martial prowess surpassing all competitors, in civil culture excelling Sui and Xia; of grand counsel detached from dust, his mind resting beyond dreams; ever forgetting his own life out of concern for the age, his will determined to rectify the world; leading ten billion, eyeing Mount Sumeru like a tiger. Therefore, He has commissioned with talisman: Great General Who Subdues Māra, Commander of the Six Deva-realms, King of Tuṣita, Vimukticandra—his subtle thoughts soaring in emptiness, striding loftily beyond dust; his strategy rivaling Kumārabhūta, his merit equal to the ninth bhūmi; mourning the three evil destinies, indignant at your unleashing harm, he draws his sword with impassioned vigor, turning like a dragon eager to charge; leading five hundred trillions, his luan-call sounds along the celestial thoroughfares. Therefore, He has commissioned with talisman: General Who Penetrates the Subtle, Commander of the Seven Deva-realms, King of the Four Dhyānas, Vajragarbha—his clear resolve in the subtle void, his golden countenance gazing afar; his favor excelling the nine bestrewals, his strength toppling mountains and seas; looking left, the Mengfan waves surge; glancing right, the Fusang radiance sinks; there is no virtue he does not bestow, no awe he does not command; leading seven hundred trillions, clouds swirl at the gate of heaven. Therefore, He has commissioned with talisman: City-Protecting General, Commander of the Nine Deva-realms, Great King of the Ten Bhūmis, Vimalakīrti—his extraordinary calculations inconceivable, his Dharma-axe reaching thunderously; his body uniting with divine form, his provisional manifestations ten thousandfold; a breath, and the clouds of the nine provinces crumble; a shout, and the ten directions bend like grass; his awe covers the lowest fools, and the innocent feel anguish; leading ninety billion, watering his horses at the divine ford. Therefore, He has commissioned with talisman: Inspecting Great General, Commander of the Nineteen Deva-realms, Great King of the Ten Abodes, Mañjuśrī—inheriting the lineage from distant origins, his form shining with the three luminaries; his body naturally diamond-like, his spirit lofty and stature immense; adapting to a thousand paths, his profound strategies numbering ten thousand; all movements are felt in his single person, all thoughts stilled in a single moment; deeply harboring compassion, his affections encompass the four means of embracing; leading troops numerous as sands of dust, soaring across this land. Therefore, He has commissioned with talisman: Great General Who Rectifies Teaching, Commander of the Nineteen Deva-realms, Controller of Māra Military Affairs, Colonel of the Heterodox, King of the Middle Thousand Realms, Avalokiteśvara—his wisdom and strategy fathomless, his diamond wisdom casting a far-reaching net; clearly comprehending the six spiritual penetrations, brightly examining the three securities; now walking among the heterodox, brandishing sharp points as he rises; now assuming forms in the twice-nine realms, relieving people from ruin; waving his hand, the Iron Ring Mountains crumble; exhaling a breath, floating clouds collapse the cliffs; able to bestow unsolicited benefit upon the ten directions; leading inconceivable troops, with the howl of wind and roar of tigers. Therefore, He has commissioned with talisman: Great General Who Pacifies and Transforms, Supreme Commander of the Ten Directions and Three Realms, Successor King, the Great Compassionate One \[Maitreya\]—his wondrous form calm and composed, his heavenly bearing luminous and outstanding; his body surpassing vajra, his mind encompassing beyond dust; his fierce resolve piercing the sky, his axe of wisdom swinging afar; the unarisen revolves within his breast, provisional wisdom responds outside of worldly affairs; wherever his resolve aims, nothing fails to succeed; awe and grace practiced together, the ultimate and the conventional expounded side by side; leading eight hundred trillions, his chariots strictly arrayed awaiting the command. The ranks of valiant warriors fill the great trichiliocosm; diamond-like men cram the eight extremities; all yearn to aid the campaign and sweep across the six directions. Riding the precious chariots of the perfections, observing the cultivated path of the eightfold correctness, striding the fine steeds of the six spiritual penetrations, holding the divine reins of the empty school, bending the fine bows of the four dhyānas, releasing the sharp arrows of provisional wisdom, their neighing steeds are martial, their light steps majestic; clasping swords and brandishing spears, they utter long chants challenging the enemy. Furthermore, your ancestors, General, possessed recurring brilliance over generations, aiding and rescuing the imperial enterprise, having served the sacred court through the ages without the slightest lapse; as exalted as the Teacher of the Way Śāriputra and the five hundred, who secretly perceived the Heavenly Mandate and received the royal transformation, to whom the Sacred Sovereign opened his heart, conferring names, titles, fiefs, and lands, their achievements rivaling the former ministers and their fame covering myriad realms. Yet, Sir, what mind makes you arbitrarily give rise to contrary views, arrogantly lingering in the distant wilderness and stubbornly clinging to an ordinary position, letting poison and harm run rampant among the common people and calamity flow through eternal kalpas? Is this not lamentable? Is this not an error? Formerly, during a time of famine, you were misled by things, raving in confusion; your heart fled to the counterfeit, wandering as an outcast outside. For a single misstep among a hundred actions, even the worthy and accomplished can stumble. For long it was thought that you would gather your wisdom and abandon folly, submit your guilt at the palace gate, bind your body and pull out your hairpin, roaming together with the gathered talents and delighting in the Way, with glorious fame from beginning to end. Yet you still cling to folly and maintain delusion, stealing ease in a heterodox station, relying on the mountain of ignorance to exalt yourself, depending on the forest of views to give free rein to your thoughts, wallowing in the defiled dust of the six desires, toying with heterodox delusion to amuse your nature, erecting the lofty banner of arrogance, arraying the sinister formation of avidya, striding broadly on the long path, lightly trifling with the divine vessels, stealing and usurping the heavenly palaces, and defying the sun and moon. I fear this is no different from raising a hand to obscure the three luminaries, scooping earth to fill the four seas, beating a drum to contest the thunder's sound, or grasping a torch to compete with the lightning's blaze. Though your mind is set on lofty goals, the undertaking will be hard to achieve! Yet, General, you planted virtue in the profound ford, your roots tracing far back; your brilliant radiance shines so that all subordinates gaze at it; the foundation for aspiring to nobility is easy to mount, and your accumulated merits are a pity to lose. You may reform the past and cultivate the future, turning swiftly to submission, apologizing for your errors at the vermilion gate, and making peace with the Way. Your household and realm will both survive, and ruler and subject will both shine; acquiring fame and gaining peace, your eyes will brighten and your view will expand; your kinsmen will be tranquil—is this not splendid? When the Great Host sets forth, myriad regions will tremble like lightning; holding the Dharma conch in hand, they brandish together the swords of wisdom; the axe of the Way shines before the vanguard, and the sacred drums resound in the rear echelons. Once the divine bell is struck, the ten directions will topple; when the ocean waves surge, the plains will boil like soup. At that moment, Sumeru will be reduced to fine dust; heaven and earth will contract into a single grain of millet; Akṣobhya will rest in the left lapel, and Abhirati will be held in the right palm. With spiritual power such as this, how could it be withstood? However, our Dharma King embodies great benevolence and compassion, not wishing to launch an immediate assault; provisionally staying the armies, he temporarily halts the spiritual reins, and sending this letter by the road, he hopes you will turn back your straying carriage. You should soon make a sound plan, surrender bound before the palace, and entrust your life to the royal court, roaming at ease in tranquil realms; as for the high chancellor's post, who else could it be but you? For sages and men of supreme wisdom recognize the moment, clarify duty to avert calamity, and know to return when in extremity—this is praised by the noble man. This is the lofty autumn for turning toward fortune, the fine season for gaining merit. Formerly, when Jie of Xia lacked the Way, the King of Yin launched an expedition; when Zhou of Shang initiated chaos, King Wu of Zhou raised an army. This is the regular model of past and present, a clear warning for you, General. Though we differ in form in our present generation, our refined taste in the flavor of the Way is one; when men and devas diverge, how could that create estrangement? I trust you will readily submit your life upon this letter. The reason my words are poignant and exhaustive is that I do not wish the fragrant orchid to wither in summer, or the jade branch to break its tip. Ponder deeply these ultimate words and properly follow this fine plan: do not let your person overturn the three realms; do not let the six devas become an overgrown field of tares. Looking up with swift eyes, my supportive sentiments flow freely. Facing this paper, feelings abound, yet words do not express all my thought. Shi Daoan bows his head.
