> Your Majesty, responding to the True to govern things, attuned to the worldly to lead the people, took pity on these ravenous whales and commiserated with this dire suffering. Thereupon, you commanded your minister to raise banners in the fields of form and demand reckoning at the court of mind. How could your minister dare rely on his own unworthiness? I respectfully received your wondrous stratagem. On the sixteenth day of the fourth month past, our army camped in the realm of mind. That very night, during the first watch, we engaged the rebels. Thereupon, your minister secretly met through hidden mechanisms and rode forth in mysterious accord, massing naval vessels at the ford of the six perfections and marshaling war chariots on the track of the One Vehicle. Encamped for three months, we proclaimed the pure Sanskrit hymns to declare our majesty; aligned in battle arrays for ninety days, we struck the ringing bells to arouse morale. The ālaya-vijñāna, obstinately mired in deep darkness, failed to understand; clinging to its exhaustive deliberations, it did not budge—just as a mantis tries to stop a chariot wheel, or bees and scorpions harbor venom. It thereupon dispatched its false General of Ever-Moving, the ādāna-vijñāna, who led the scions of ignorance and, relying on an untrustworthy disposition, occupied the gandharva city to resist your minister. It also dispatched its false Commander-in-Chief of Svabhāva, the sage Kapila, and its false General of Clinging to This, Kātyāyanīputra, who summoned a rabble and banded together swarms of ants, shaking the borderlands and stirring up clamor and momentum. Your minister thereupon deployed the various generals and directed the tactical plans: I dispatched Acting Commissioner Bearing Credentials, Great General of Dust-Extraction commanding the military affairs of the four stations of mindfulness, Duke of the County of the Path-Limbs, Minister Seeking-Knowledge; and Acting Commissioner Bearing Credentials, Great General of Realm-Pacification commanding the military affairs of the eightfold noble path, Duke of the County of Truth-Penetration, Minister Knowing-as-it-is. They organized the fierce warriors, moving like shooting stars and turning like lightning, advancing through the various expedient paths to quiet the border realms of conditioning. Minister Seeking-Knowledge and the others investigated names, examined meanings, tracked shadows, and followed footsteps—now advancing boldly through the secret chambers, now wheeling about to fight in the gaps of adjacent subtlest particles. Matters reached their limit and principles were exhausted; realms ended and roads ran out. The primordial lineage thereby melted away like ice, and the Sāṃkhya fractured like tiles. Kapila and the others, knowing where the Mahāyāna lay and recognizing where the mysterious succession led, each led several thousand exhausted troops and all came forward to beg for their lives. Your minister pitied their late awakening and granted them the opportunity to reform themselves, immediately ordering Daoist Master of Compassion-Contemplation Bi Wuyuan to settle and nurture them according to convenience. The false Grand Master of Remonstrance, Paramārtha, harbored thoughts that surpassed the multitude and bore extraordinary talents for transcending the world; intending to preserve the state to render loyalty, he was conversely bound in peril. On the night of the fifteenth day of this month, your minister, drawing upon the courage of the central army and taking advantage of the alien enemies' discordant hearts, took up arms in hand and personally led the troops. Thereupon, I commanded Acting Commissioner Bearing Credentials, Great General of Tuṣita, Pacification and Comforting Ambassador of the Sahā Circuit, Senior Pillar of State, and Duke of the Realm of Ketumatī, Minister Ajita; and Acting Commissioner Bearing Credentials, Great General of Jambudvīpa, Commander-in-Chief of India commanding all military affairs of India, Senior Pillar of State, and Duke of the Realm of Puruṣapura, Minister Vasubandhu; both possessing the Way that surmounts the three emptannesses and spirits that roam through the four unimpeded knowledges, to proclaim victory and defeat and clarify right and wrong. I also dispatched Acting Commissioner Bearing Credentials, Great General of Equanimity and Chief of Staff of the Army, Senior Pillar of State, and Duke of the County of Coolness, Minister Right-Mindfulness; and Acting Commissioner Bearing Credentials, Great General of Pervasion and Army Marshal, Senior Pillar of State, and Duke of the County of Eternal Joy, Minister Tathatā; to join with your minister in profound inner and outer unity and mutually coordinate. At that time, the frontier autumn air was brisk, and the border moon was cold. Banners flew as high as the Milky Way, and blade tips were as clean as the frosty sky. Donning the great vows and mounting the perfect penetration, we leapt past the two contemplations and vied to advance; forcing through a thousand gates, we entered together. Although saṃsāra is boundless, in a single thought we saw its shores; though afflictions have companions, in an instant we saw their collapse. The false Chancellor Chenxian and the false Vice-Director Lusi, at their wits' end, closed their doors and hanged themselves to seek life. The false Minister of Works Harivarman and the false Metropolitan Commandant Dharmatrāta each held the remnant forces and entrenched themselves in deep fortresses; suspicious doubts arose in competition, and deceit and distrust sprouted. Tolerating ruin, they saw none to support them, and thus they perished, with none able to rescue them. The ādāna and its false sovereign had no strong reinforcements outside and lacked deep counsel within; their armies were exhausted, and their fortifications were breached and exposed. Sovereign and ministers lost their composure, with no ground to advance or retreat; holding jade bi discs in their mouths and kowtowing, they carried their coffins to await punishment. Your minister then exposed the severed head of the ādāna, released Paramārtha from his captivity, deposed that benighted king, and enthroned his worthy heir, ensuring that the ancestral sacrifices would not cease, that he would forever be a feudal ruler over the turf, and that hereditary virtue would be handed down, constantly maintaining the rites of paying tribute. Thereupon, the ominous vapors were dispelled, like spring ice melting in harmonious warmth; the vile and filthy were annihilated, like autumn leaves swept away by a cool breeze. The six senses were radically transcended, leaving no anxiety over watchtowers and fortifications; the three realms were tranquil and quiet, no longer alarmed by the wind and dust of war. This was indeed because your majestic brilliance reached afar and the hosts of soldiers were of one mind—how could your minister's humble inadequacy have brought this about? Overwhelmed by the utmost joy, I respectfully dispatch Minister Xizhongzhi, Adjutant of the Noble Virtue Commandery, bearing this victory announcement, to gallop by post to report it to you.
