### [8.34](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2103.8.34)

> You say that benevolence arose from the loss of virtue, and that ritual was born of the thinning of loyalty and good faith; resting content in what you have practiced, you disparage what you have not seen. Furthermore, great music shares its harmony with heaven and earth, and great ritual shares its moderation with heaven and earth; how could they consist merely in years of adorned respect and periods of demanding recompense? The purport of Laozi was fundamentally to remedy frivolity and dissolution: emptiness, gentleness, and excelling at humility are indeed sufficient for cultivating oneself, but if one does not elevate the worthy and capable, how could governance be carried on? Since he merely upheld the single quality of modesty in the Changes, he is simply one branch of the Confucian tradition. I hope you will not join with the unrestrained in completely abandoning the five virtues.
