問。西域名佛。此方云覺。西言菩提。此云為道。西云泥洹。此言無為。西稱般若。此飜智慧。准此斯義則孔老是佛。無為大道先已有之。

> The questioner asks: In the Western Regions he is called 'Fo' (Buddha); here we say 'Jue' (Awakened). In the West they say 'bodhi'; here it is called the 'Way'. In the West they say 'nirvāṇa' (niyuan); here it is called 'non-action' (asaṃskṛta). In the West they call it 'prajñā'; here it is translated as 'wisdom'. According to this meaning, Confucius and Laozi are the Buddha, and the great Way of non-action already existed here previously.
