> During the Kaihuang era of the Sui, Yan Gong, a man of Jiang Prefecture, built a retreat below the outer city walls to copy the Lotus Sūtra. He made pure offerings; whether of paper or brushes, it was always done with a pure heart, practicing no deception. He accepted what was given in faith, never begging or seeking, and undertook the work as donations were received, managing it strictly according to the Dharma, providing for the scribes to their delight. There were constantly ten monastics and laypeople providing funds. Gong personally inspected and oversaw the work, never professing weariness at his toil. Once, someone borrowed ten thousand cash of sūtra money from him; unable to refuse, Gong gave it to him. Having obtained the cash, the borrower loaded it onto a boat, which capsized in midstream; the money was lost, but the man survived. That day, Gong entered the money vault and saw ten thousand cash dripping wet as if washed in water, which he found astonishing; only later, upon meeting the man who borrowed the cash, did he learn of the drowning. Furthermore, a merchant went to Lake Gongting and presented offerings to the deity; at night he dreamed that the deity told him: 'I request you to take these things and deliver them to Yan Gong's Lotus \[project\] to be used for the sūtra.' Upon waking, the offered goods were before him. Once, when Gong went to the market to purchase paper and was short of cash, a person suddenly appeared, handed Gong three thousand cash, and said: 'To assist you in buying paper.' Having spoken, he vanished. Moreover, a fisherman at night saw flames floating toward him on the river; approaching with his boat, he found it was a sūtra case. When he examined it at dawn, it proved to be a sūtra of the Yan family. Later, \[Gong\] made a vow, which said in brief: 'Let there be no character that does not pass before my eyes, no character upon which I do not apply my mind.' Up to the end of the Daye era, his descendants still carried on the sūtra enterprise. Groups of bandits made an agreement not to enter their village; the villagers have relied upon this to this day, and the enterprise continues as of old.
