> During the reign of Emperor Taiwu of the Northern Wei, Śramaṇa Tanshi possessed great numinous anomalies. He had sat in continuous meditation for over fifty years. His bare feet never wore sandals, walking through the mud, yet when he shook his feet, they became clean, whiter even than his face; people commonly called him the 'White-Footed Araṇyaka'. When Helian Chang breached Chang'an, Tanshi was struck with naked blades without suffering any injury; because of him, a great number of monks and nuns were spared from death. Emperor Taiwu held him in deep reverence. More than ten years after his death, his bodily appearance and color remained unchanged.
