> The outer treatise says: Before the nine eras of the Heavenly Sovereign, written records had not yet been made; after the six lines of Taihao, writing first arose. From then on, documents and records gradually expanded; former worthies and past sages all authored classical canons. Deferrals of the throne and armed conflicts were fully laid out in seal-script registers. Thus the scribe of the left recorded events and the scribe of the right recorded speeches; with straight brushes and forthright words, there was nothing falsified or fabricated. Both the 'Treatise on Foreign Countries' in the \*Book of Wei\* and Huangfu Mi's \*Biographies of High-Minded Scholars\* state: 'The sūtra of the śramaṇa Buddha was composed by Laozi.'
