> The \*Record of Wu\* says: The King of Wu asked Senghui, 'In what way does the Buddha-Dharma differ from worldly ways?' He answered, 'Those who do evil in the open are punished by men; those who do evil in secret are punished by spirits. The \*Book of Changes\* says: "A house that heaps good deeds will surely have surplus joy"; the \*Book of Odes\* sings: "Seek blessings without turning aside." Although these are standard maxims of Confucian and worldly traditions, they are also the gradual instructions of the Buddha-Dharma.'
