> The noble gentleman said: 'The Yinyang erqi huangjing jing states: "Flowing cinnabar, cycled nine times, congeals qi into essence. Essence transforms into spirit. Spirit transforms into a human being. The yang qi is red and called the Mysterious Cinnabar; the yin qi is yellow and called the Yellow Essence. Yin and yang join and copulate, the two qis sending down essence. Essence transforms into spirit. When essence and spirit congeal, they correspond above to the Nine Heavens. The qi of the Nine Heavens descends to the cinnabar field, congeals together with spirit, and oversees the Gate of Life. It must pass through nine times: these are the nine cinnabars. Transforming above and congealing below, they complete a human being." It does not say that there is a separate spirit of the Dao that can govern all things and cause them to be born.'
