> Now, as with pepper and orchids or the abalone market, being habituated for long, one delights in what was first entered; when surface embellishments are lavish and pervasive, one indulges love out of biased emotions. Thus, regarding the 'Xianchi' and 'Yuying' music, Mo Di had his discourse 'Condemning Music'; regarding pure sovereigns and sagacious rulers, Tian Ba had his speech 'Defaming the Sages.' Such is their estimation! How much more so when, although the qilin and the roebuck are of different natures, Lu customs made their forms equal; though the deer and the horse are of distinct shapes, the people of Qin treated their appearances as one. Even casual shifts of perception can abruptly reach such an extent—how much more so for ordinary people! Zhongqing has thus set forth the superiority and inferiority of Śākya and Laozi; I, moved to pity and grieved by it, have fully addressed them in the subsequent treatises. Each item is answered in turn, as detailed above.
