> The External Argument says: Lord Lao's Dao is attuned to the pivot of the circle, of equal measure with empty space; his spirit transcends external forms, endlessly transforming. Therefore, his lifespan is certainly unlike that of mortals: his concealment and manifestation clearly differ from the worldly. Śākya's lifetime was limited: his lifespan had a brief allotted time; once extinguished, he could not be reborn. (Commentary retort: Since Laozi is said to enjoy longevity, in which commandery or county is he today?) How fragile and transient were his eighty years! This is the fifth difference, regarding longevity and premature death.
