- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.22](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2118.1.22)

> Miaoming said, 'Zizhang said: "The noble person honors the worthy and tolerates the multitude; he praises the good and pities the incompetent." If I am greatly worthy, toward others there is nothing I will not tolerate. If I am not worthy, others will reject me; how could I reject others? (The Analects: Disciples of Zixia asked Zizhang about friendship. Zizhang said, 'What does Zixia say?' They replied, 'Zixia says: Associate with those who are acceptable; reject those who are unacceptable.' Zizhang said, 'This differs from what I have heard: the noble person honors the worthy and tolerates the multitude, and so forth.' Zixia's words were narrow and cramped, and Zizhang rightly criticized them. The character 'tolerate' spoken by Zizhang precisely breaks Zixia's character 'reject'.)
