> The Analects takes not disobeying in three matters as the foremost aspect of filial piety (Meng Yizi asked about filial piety; the Master said: 'Never disobey.' Meng Yizi was a grandee of Lu who asked the Master about filial piety; the Master said, 'Never disobey,' meaning not to go against principle. Fan Chi, the Master's disciple, was driving his chariot; the Master, fearing Yizi had not understood, spoke to Fan Chi to elucidate it. Fan Chi asked, 'What does that mean?' The Master said: 'Serve them with propriety while alive; bury them with propriety when dead; sacrifice to them with propriety.' Thus serving them in life, burying them, and sacrificing to them completely encompass serving one’s parents from beginning to end; therefore it is the foremost aspect of filial piety).
