> 'To cut down a single tree at the wrong season is unfilial; to kill a single beast at the wrong season is unfilial' (Book of Rites: Master Zeng said: 'Trees are felled according to season; birds and beasts are killed according to season.' The Master said, with duan pronounced duan: 'Cutting down a single tree or killing a single beast out of season is unfilial.' Therefore, the noble person expands his mind of humaneness and love; when he cannot bear even to harm grasses, trees, birds, and beasts, how much less toward humans?).
