> Taikang and King You of Zhou were dissipated rulers. (The \*Shiji\* states that Taikang was the son of Qi and grandson of King Yu. He was fond of hunting. The \*Shangshu\* says: 'Indulging in women within, indulging in hunting without, soaking in wine, fond of music, high eaves and carved walls—his dissipation was extreme.' If it is like this, his state could never fail to perish. The \*Shiji\* states that King You of Zhou doted on Baosi, who disliked laughing. King You made beacon fires and large drums, ordering: 'If bandits arrive, light the fires to summon rescue.' King You playfully lit the beacon fires; the feudal lords all arrived, but there were no bandits. Baosi laughed heartily, and King You was delighted. Later, when the Hu troops arrived, the king lit the beacon fires; the feudal lords did not believe it, taking it for a joke. They subsequently killed King You at the foot of Mount Li and captured Baosi.)
