- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [5.12](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2118.5.12)

季康子患盜問於孔子。孔子對曰。苟子之不欲。雖賞之不竊（且上若不貪欲。則雖賞民使之為盜。民以知恥而不偷盜也）。

> 'Ji Kangzi, distressed about thieves, asked Confucius. Confucius replied: "If you yourself were not covetous, even if you rewarded them for it, they would not steal." (Moreover, if the superior is not greedy and desirous, then even if he rewards the people and tells them to become thieves, the people, knowing shame, will not steal.)
