> His mother carried him for eighty-one years and gave birth to him beneath a plum tree, whereupon he pointed to it as his surname. (The father of Laozi was surnamed Han, named Qian, with the courtesy name Yuanbei; his mother was called Jingfu. She was pregnant through eighty-one years, and gave birth to him beneath a plum tree, so he took it as his surname and name. His courtesy name was Boyang. He was four chi and six cun tall, with a protruding forehead and thick eyebrows, an upturned lip and a broken nose, pointed buttocks and wide hips, elongated ears and disheveled hair; hence he was called Lao Dan.)
