I venture to believe that spiritual power has no fixed bounds, and without divine thought its principles cannot be explained; the holy teaching is profound and distant, and without sagacious phrasing how could its source be introduced? Therefore, I braved your majestic awe, daring to hope for the titles. Yet the imperial regard looked from afar and did not deign to grant assent. Examining myself and pondering repeatedly, my companions and I were at a loss. Xuanzang has heard that when the sun and moon cling to heaven, they still share their brightness through doors and windows; when rivers mark the earth, they also send their moisture to crags and cliffs. The grand music of Yunhe does not withhold its sound from the deaf and dim; the rare treasures of gold and jade, how could they conceal their brilliance from the foolish and blind? Daring to draw upon this principle, I entreat you once again.
