The Dharma Master has long displayed lofty conduct and early departed beyond worldly dust, sailing the precious boat to mount the other shore, searching out the wonderful Way to open the Dharma gates, broadly proclaiming the great teachings, and washing away manifold offenses. Thus, when the cloud of compassion is about to roll up or spread out, it shelters the four immaterial realms; when the sun of wisdom is about to dim or brighten, it illuminates the eight poles. The one who spreads it out and makes it bright—is it not none other than the Dharma Master? My own learning is shallow and my mind clumsy; with regard to mundane matters I am still deluded, so how could anyone fathom the profound subtleties of the Buddhist teachings? As for requesting me to write titles for the sūtras, this is not something I have heard of. Furthermore, regarding the newly compiled Datang xiyu ji, I shall personally peruse it.
