> When the Buddha was in the country of Śrāvastī, the three months of the summer retreat came to an end, arriving at the New Year. He said to Ānanda, “Strike the gaṇḍī. The sound of the gaṇḍī will pervade an entire Buddha-land; the denizens of hell, hungry ghosts, animals, and all those suffering from illness, hearing the sound, will have their afflictions removed and all attain peace and comfort.” At that time, the Buddha said, “Monks, you should rise and distribute the śalākā tallies, face one another to repent and reproach yourselves, confess all transgressions and non-Dharmic acts committed, patiently harmonize with one another, and purify your body, speech, and mind, leaving no remaining defilement.” The monks then accepted the Buddha’s instruction; when the matter was finished, they returned to their seats. Then the Buddha, out of loving-kindness and compassion, arose from his seat, joined his palms toward the monks, and said, “Although I am the Unsurpassed Honored One, the Utmost True One who is without fault, this should be practiced as an instruction.” Then the Buddha stepped back, repented and apologized before the noble assembly, and, feeling compassion for all, returned to his grass mat. As soon as the Buddha sat down again, the noble assembly did likewise, each returning to their former seats. At that time, ten thousand monks attained the trace of the Way (srotāpanna), and eight thousand monks became arhats (clarifying the matters of the pravāraṇa and receiving monastic seniority; from the \*Sūtra on the New Year\*).
