> 'Next, I saw a woman who asked me to tell the king: when at her husband's home, she longs for her parents' house, and when at her parents' house, she longs for her husband's home.' The king said: 'You may tell her: It is because of your depraved mind. At your parents' house, you keep an adulterous lover. When at your husband's home, you long for that lover; when there, growing slightly weary, you long back for your lawful husband. That is why. If you guard your mind and abandon depravity, you will not have this affliction. Next, on a tree, I saw a pheasant who asked me to tell the king: when in other trees, its cry is discordant, but when in this tree, its cry is sorrowful and harmonious, and it does not know the reason.' The king told that man: 'Because under that tree there is a large cauldron of gold, its cry above it is mournfully sweet. Elsewhere there is no gold, so its voice is not pleasant.' The king said to Daṇḍin: 'You had many faults, but I have already released you. You are distressed by poverty; take the cauldron of gold beneath the tree—I give it to you.' Receiving the king's instruction, he dug up the ground and took the gold, trading for what he needed, and was joyful and lacked nothing. That great king was myself; and Daṇḍin was the present brāhmaṇa Piṇḍola-dhvaja. (From the Sūtra of the Wise and the Foolish, fascicle 11)
