> "Good son, when a bodhisattva receives and upholds the prohibitive precepts, he makes this vow: 'I would rather cast this body into a pit of fire than ever violate the prohibition of the Buddhas of the three times by engaging in impurity with women. I would rather have hot iron wrap around my body than ever dare, with a body that has broken the precepts, to receive the robes of faithful dānapatis. I would rather swallow hot iron pellets with this mouth than ever dare, with a mouth that has violated the precepts, to eat the food and drink of faithful dānapatis. I would rather lie on great burning iron than ever dare, with a body that has broken the precepts, to receive the bedding and sleeping mats of faithful dānapatis. I would rather receive three hundred lances upon this body than ever dare, with a body that has violated the precepts, to receive the medicines of faithful dānapatis. I would rather cast this body into a boiling iron cauldron than ever dare, with a body that has broken the precepts, to receive the houses and dwellings of faithful dānapatis. I would rather have this body smashed with iron mallets from head to foot, reducing it to fine dust, than receive the reverence and worship of kṣatriyas, brāhmaṇas, and householders with a body that has broken the precepts. I would rather have both eyes gouged out with hot iron than view others' fine forms with a defiled mind. I would rather have this body pierced all over with iron awls than listen to pleasant sounds with a defiled mind. I would rather have this nose cut off with a sharp knife than greedily smell scents with a defiled mind. I would rather have this tongue lacerated with a sharp knife than greedily cling to delicious flavors with a defiled mind. I would rather have this body hacked and chopped with sharp axes than greedily cling to pleasant touches with a defiled mind. Why is this? Because such causes can cause a practitioner to fall into the hells, the animal realm, or the hungry ghosts.' Kāśyapa, this is what is called a bodhisattva-mahāsattva guarding and upholding the prohibitive precepts. He bestows all of them upon all sentient beings, wishing that by these causes and conditions, sentient beings may guard and uphold the prohibitions and attain pure precepts.
