> As the Guanfo sanmei jing states: On the Tathāgata’s head there are 84,000 hairs, all falling to both sides and coiling to the right as they grow; the boundaries are distinct and the four corners are clear. Each hair-pore spirally generates five-colored light, entering into the aforementioned fourteen colors of light. \[The Buddha said,\] “Formerly when I was in the palace, my wet nurse washed my head. At that time Mahāprajāpatī came to my place and said, ‘When Siddhārtha was born, there were many marvelous wonders. If someone asks me, “How long is your son’s hair?”, how should I answer? Now I shall measure the hair to know its length.’ She then bade me stretch out my hair. Mother measured it with a ruler: it was one zhang, three chi, and five cun long. When released, it curled to the right into snail-like spirals. When about to take a consort, she measured it once more: it was one zhang, three chi, and five cun long. When I went forth from home, the gods received it and carried it away: it was also one zhang, three chi, and five cun long. Now, father king, look at the Tathāgata’s hair.” He then stretched it with his hand: from the Nyagrodha Monastery to his father the king's palace, like dark lapis lazuli, it circled the city seven times. Within the Buddha’s hair, the great assembly all saw multiple colors of light, which cannot be fully described. Drawing in the hair and rolling up the light, turning and winding to the right, it returned to rest on the Buddha’s uṣṇīṣa, immediately forming snail-like spirals. Furthermore, the Sengqi lü (Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya) states: While the Buddha was in the world, he shaved his hair once every four months. According to the Sarvāstivāda treatises, although he shaved it once every four months, it was like an ordinary person's appearance of shaving the hair every seven days. Furthermore, the Wenshushili wen jing states: For ordinary people, when the hair is two fingers long, it should be shaved, or in two months’ time. If it is shaved when short, this is an aśaikṣa bodhisattva; if it exceeds two fingers, this is also an aśaikṣa bodhisattva. The nails must not be long; they may be \[as long as\] the breadth of a single grain of cereal. Why? For the sake of scratching an itch. Furthermore, the Sifen lü (Dharmaguptaka-vinaya) states: The Buddha said, “I permit the monks to cut their nails close to the skin. At the longest, they may be like \[the breadth of\] a barleycorn. They should cut their hair, shaving it once a half-month; at the longest, it may be two fingers, or they may shave it once every two months (as for ‘two months’, the white and black fortnights each have fifteen days, so thirty days in this region constitutes two months).”
