> Only because the blessings of our sentient beings were exhausted did the Dharma King thus pass away, turning his head to the north by the Hiraṇyavatī River at the age of eighty. His responsive body shattered like grain and his blood flowed—how could he be brought back? They vied to resolve their final doubts and competed to present the final offering. Alas, the torch of wisdom and cloud of compassion have been extinguished in the long night; his children are truly to be pitied! Yet the Dharma body is supremely quiescent and ultimately unconditioned; that which is guided by the reward and emanation bodies accords with capacities and adapts to the mundane. Since he was said to manifest birth, how could there not be demise? Though ordinary people and sages differ, none can escape it. Therefore, with subtle words, he suffered back pain only then to turn the sweet nectar; fictively relying on his right side, he yet emitted radiance. These are the traces of absence of illness. And when, having been wrapped in a thousand layers of fine cotton, he revealed his two feet, and when the golden coffin was about to close, he rose and joined his palms—these are signs indicating non-extinction. Thus, reducing his body to ashes demonstrates the provisional, while permanent abiding reveals the real. The analogy of the moon in a vessel—is its meaning not clear?
