> In the Lizhaoyu area, west of the Feng River and east of Hu County in Yongzhou under the Tang, there was a gold image. It was three feet six inches high, and four feet including the flaming halo, and it frequently emitted radiant light. The figure of the image bare its right shoulder and was exceedingly majestic. Having heard of it, I went to seek it out and saw it. An inscription upon its pedestal read: 'Made on the eighth day of the fourth month of the twentieth year of Jianyuan of the Qin at Zhong Temple in Chang'an. The nun Huishao, moved that after the Buddha's nirvāṇa she was fortunate enough to encounter his surviving images, therefore relied on what remained of her body to cast this divine form. If sincere resonance must surely find a response, she vows to cause the ten directions to share in the blessing.' Such was the inscription. When I asked about the circumstances of its discovery, it was said: 'Formerly, when the two teachings were abolished, it was subsequently hidden in a whirlpool \[called\] Luoren in the Feng River. There was a person walking on the riverbank who heard a sound within the whirlpool and also saw it emit radiant light. He told the village elders, who then hastened to the water to search for it. The whirlpool contained pure sand, and radiant light issued from the water. They thereupon proceeded to excavate and obtained this aforesaid image. At that time it was still during the Zhou dynasty. The village families concealed it and took turns making offerings to it. Shut away in an unoccupied hall, it emitted light to illuminate itself. It is now in the village.'
