> He also asked: "Now on Mount Tantai south of Yuhua Palace, there is a brick pagoda, forty paces on each side. The lower story is exceedingly grand, with stone niches on all four sides. Nearby there are broken bricks, and there are also more than thirty brick kilns. The elders do not know what era it belongs to, yet the sound of a bell is always heard there."
> He answered, saying: "This was King Mu's temple; it was called Lingshan. When it came to King Aśoka's time, he commanded the mountain spirit to build a pagoda here. During the chaos at the end of the Western Jin, when the Five Barbarians seized power, Liu Yao had his capital in Chang'an and repeatedly dreamt of this mountain's Buddha appearing inside a brick pagoda. Sitting, he said to Yao: 'Drink less wine and do not indulge in sensual desires. Banish the crooked and flattering, and promote and employ the loyal and good.' Yao was unable to comply. Later, while drunk in Luoyang, he fell from his horse and was captured by Shi Le. Earlier, because of what he had realized from the dream, Yao had sent men into the mountains to search for it, and they found this image sitting in a small brick pagoda, matching the dream. He then demolished the small pagoda and built a larger one, nineteen stories high, and also built temple buildings that were exceedingly grand and magnificent. The temple was named Fadeng ('Dharma Lamp'), and he ordained three hundred monks to reside there. After Yao perished and the Zhao fell, forty-three people in the temple cultivated and attained the third fruit. Behind the present pagoda, the mountain spirit built another temple to make offerings to the monks of the third fruit. The spirit went to Mount Taibai to gather lingzhi herbs to offer to the holy monks, all of whom thereby obtained extended life. The temple still exists today, though ordinary mortals cannot see it; the sound of the bell that is heard is the bell of that temple. Although the original foundation of that pagoda derived from Liu Yao, it was still the site where King Mu established a temple; it was also the ancient temple of Kāśyapa Tathāgata. During the Zhenguan era, on the mountain by the Ciwu River north of Yuhua, herds of deer were constantly seen gathering in that place. When chased away, they would return. Someone found this remarkable and dug ten feet deep at the place where the deer gathered, discovering a stone image about ten feet tall, which is worshipped at present."
