> He also asked: "Regarding the sandalwood image of the former Daming Temple in Jingzhou, it is said to have been made by King Udayana, and according to tradition was copied from there and brought to the Liang dynasty. Now it also exists in the capital; which one is the original?"
> He answered, saying: "Daming has the original image. When Emperor Gaozu of the Liang passed away, the image came to Jingzhu. In the third year of the Chengsheng era of Emperor Yuan, the Northern Zhou pacified Liang; afterward, when they compiled inventories of national treasures, all entered the Northern Zhou. As for that sandalwood image, there was a Master Monk Zhen who hid it inside his chamber and gave large amounts of wealth to the envoys, so the image was able to stay. In the ninth year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui, Wenzu (Emperor Wen) sent the envoy Liu Guyan to go and welcome it. The monks of the temple again pleaded that the image be allowed to pacify the Jingchu region. Since Gu was a native of that region, he complied, and they separately carved another sandalwood \[image\] to take back in respectful obedience to the imperial decree. At that time, when looking for a craftsman, they found a brāhmaṇa monk named Chenduo (Zhenda), who made it. This is the image now in Daxingshan Temple in the Western Capital; it is also extremely miraculous. The original image remains in Jingzhou. The monks covered it over with lacquered cloth, so its marks and signs do not equal those of the genuine one (originally it was the body of the Buddha when seven days old; now with the cloth and lacquer added, it appears as a mature man, thus differing markedly from the original). Daming was originally a dwelling place of the ancient Buddha, which is why the miraculous image was unwilling to be moved north. Recently, Master of the Dharma Yi of Changsha, through the hidden assistance of heavenly beings, had an awakening and peeled off the lacquered cloth, so that the true countenance was revealed again, greatly arousing faith. When viewing the miraculous appearance, it is carved entirely from sandalwood with no repairs or joints; the halo and pedestal are extraordinary, and the ivory carvings are simply not something made by human craft. The Daxingshan image's body deviates from the original in every detail."
