He was well versed in the sūtras and treatises, yet took the Pure Land as his principal practice, concentrating his mind to bring about a sympathetic response. Suddenly, the monk Daoquan of Qizhou arrived carrying an image of Amitāyus, saying that it had been painted by a bodhisattva endowed with the five supernatural powers from the Kukkuṭārāma monastery in India, who had ascended through the air to that Realm of Peace and Joy and depicted the Buddha’s countenance. Because this accord with his long-held devotion, Huihai bowed and performed repentance with deep reverence. Seeing the divine light shining brilliantly, he rejoiced at this rare blessing. Thereupon he copied the image with earnest devotion, vowing to be born in that land and keeping it in mind till the end of his days. At night he suddenly arose, turned westward to bow as was his custom, and upon finishing sat cross-legged. At dawn he passed away, his complexion serene and calm, as if his spirit were still present.
